Sunline SX1 Braid

Diameter chart, reel capacity & backing guide

Sunline SX1 braid manufacturer product package

SX1 is Sunline's ULT-PE braid. Its US listing includes 125-, 250-, and 600-yard packages, but not at every strength and color. A short SX1 package may suit a working section over backing even when the reel's full braid capacity is much larger.

Is SX1 right for your setup?

Consider SX1 when braid fits the presentation and you will choose any leader separately. Sunline emphasizes the underlying fiber rather than a resin coating in its product description. For your setup, focus on a useful working length, secure arbor attachment, and a diameter you can manage on the reel.

Choosing your setup

Choosing your SX1 strength

The current range includes 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 30, 40, and 50 lb. SX1's 16 lb entry is .0082 inch; use that exact entry rather than replacing it with a generic 15 lb braid diameter.

Light braid can provide plenty of calculated capacity, yet a baitcaster may require more physical diameter to manage loaded wraps and avoid digging in. Do not treat maximum yardage as the only selection criterion.

The listed 65 lb legacy entry is not supported by the current SX1 source and is excluded here. A 65 lb line from another model is not a verified SX1 substitute.

This is a specification-based setup guide, not a hands-on SX1 performance test.

Backing, working line & leaders

A 125-yard package needs a plan

Check that 125 yards covers normal casts, possible runs, and retying before assigning the rest of the reel to mono backing. A deep spool's full-capacity number can be much larger than your chosen working section.

Check the 8 lb package

The assigned US variants list 8 lb in 600 yards, not a 125-yard package. The selector shows strength-specific lengths rather than every possible combination.

Keep the leader separate

A short mono or fluorocarbon leader goes at the lure end. Mono backing goes under the braid. Use SX1 as the main line in the calculator when it is the line filling the working part of the spool.

SX1 questions, answered

Does SX1 use a generic mono-equivalent diameter?

No. This guide uses SX1's numeric inch diameter from Sunline's chart. A mono-equivalent strength label is not a universal measurement standard.

Can I fill the whole reel with SX1?

Yes, if the reel supports a secure braid attachment and you have enough line. Follow the reel maker's attachment and fill guidance rather than assuming braid will grip a bare arbor.

Is a smaller diameter always the better option?

No. Capacity is only one constraint. Rod rating, cover, target fish, knot choice, and spool handling still matter.

Specifications & sources

Specifications checked 2026-09-13. Manufacturer chart inch/mm pairs transcribed separately; assigned SKU variants verify strength-specific package lengths. Check the actual package when buying older or imported stock. Product imagery identifies the model, not every selectable strength.

Calculations use the catalog's listed inch diameters. Published inch and millimeter values may differ slightly because of rounding.
