Compare Fishing Reel Specs Side by Side

Fishing reels with similar names or size numbers can have meaningful differences in line capacity, weight, retrieve speed, drag and gearing. The ReelCalc comparison tool places the available specifications for two exact reel models next to each other so those differences are easier to evaluate.

ReelCalc does not automatically declare one reel better than another. A lighter reel, deeper spool, faster retrieve or higher drag rating can each matter differently depending on the line, rod and type of fishing you plan to use.


How to Compare Two Fishing Reels

Select Your First Reel

Choose the brand, reel family and exact model or size you want to compare. Selecting the exact model matters because different sizes and gear-ratio versions within the same family can have different capacities, weights, retrieve rates and drag specifications.

Select the Second Reel

Choose another reel in the second selector. You can compare two competing brands, two sizes from the same reel family, or different versions of the same reel.

Review the Differences

Compare the specifications side by side and focus on the measurements that matter for your intended setup. Line capacity, reel weight, retrieve rate, drag and reel size are often more useful than relying on the model name alone.

What Should You Compare When Choosing a Fishing Reel?

Reel Size

Reel size is a useful starting point, but reel-size numbers are not perfectly standardized between manufacturers. Two reels labeled 2500 or 3000 can have different weights, spool capacities, retrieve rates and drag specifications.

Compare the actual specifications of the two models rather than assuming equal size numbers mean equal reels.

Line Capacity

Line capacity tells you how much of a particular line size the spool is designed to hold. This can be especially important when comparing reels for braid, backing, deeper-water fishing, surf fishing or applications where additional running line matters.

Published capacities should always be read together with the associated line size or diameter. Different line diameters can significantly change how much line actually fits.

Reel Weight

Reel weight affects the overall weight and balance of the rod-and-reel combination. A lighter reel may be useful for techniques involving repeated casting, but weight alone should not determine which reel you choose.

Gear Ratio

Gear ratio describes the gearing relationship inside the reel. Higher and lower ratios can suit different techniques, but gear ratio alone does not tell you exactly how much line the reel retrieves with each handle turn.

Line Retrieve

Line retrieve, commonly shown as inches per turn or centimeters per turn, estimates how much line is recovered during one complete handle rotation. Two reels with similar gear ratios can still have different retrieve rates because spool diameter also affects line pickup.

Maximum Drag

Maximum drag is the manufacturer's published upper drag rating. More drag does not automatically make one reel better. The useful amount depends on the rod, line, leader, target species and fishing conditions.

Bearings

Bearing count is easy to compare, but a larger number does not automatically mean a better reel. Bearing quality and placement, gearing, sealing, tolerances and overall reel construction also affect how a reel performs.
