Step 1: Choose Standard or Metric Units
Choose Standard units if your reel capacity is listed in pounds, yards, and inches.
Choose Metric units if your reel capacity is listed in millimeters and meters.
For example:
Standard: 10 lb / 165 yd
Metric: 0.30 mm / 150 m
Many reel manufacturers list line capacity differently, so use the unit system that matches the specs printed on your spool, reel box, or manufacturer’s website.
Step 2: Choose the Right Calculator Mode
ReelCalc has two main modes: Backing + Working Line mode and Capacity Only mode.
Backing + Working Line Mode
Use Backing + Working Line mode when you want to put a specific amount of braid, fluorocarbon, or other main line on top of cheaper backing.
This is the best option if you bought a 150-yard or 300-yard spool of braid and want to know how much mono backing goes underneath it.
Capacity Only Mode
Use Capacity Only mode if you do not want to use backing.
Capacity Only mode estimates how much line will fit on your reel when you change from one line diameter to another. This is useful if your reel is rated for mono but you want to know how much braid, fluorocarbon, or a different diameter line will fit.
Step 3: Enter Your Reel’s Listed Capacity
Start with the line capacity printed on your reel or listed by the manufacturer.
For example, your reel might say:
10 lb / 165 yd
That means the reel is rated to hold about 165 yards of 10 lb monofilament.
If the reel uses metric specs, it might say:
0.30 mm / 150 m
That means the reel is rated to hold about 150 meters of line with a 0.30 mm diameter.
The listed capacity gives ReelCalc a starting point for estimating spool volume.
Step 4: Enter Your Main Line
Next, enter the amount of main line you want on the reel.
For example, if you want 150 yards of braid on top of backing, enter 150 yards as your working line amount.
Then enter the diameter of that braid, fluorocarbon, or mono.
Line diameter is very important. Two lines with the same pound test can have different diameters, and that changes how much line will fit on the spool.
For the most accurate result, use the diameter listed by the line manufacturer.
Step 5: Enter Your Backing Line
If you are using backing, enter the diameter of your backing line.
Monofilament is commonly used as backing because it is affordable, easy to tie, and helps braid grip the spool.
For example, 10 lb monofilament is commonly around 0.012 inches or 0.30 mm in diameter, depending on the brand.
You can use any backing line as long as you know the diameter.
Step 6: Click Calculate
After you enter the reel capacity, main line, and backing diameter, click Calculate.
ReelCalc will estimate how much backing you need underneath your chosen amount of main line.
If you entered IPT, or inches per turn, ReelCalc can also estimate how many handle turns of backing may be needed. This is only an estimate because line lay, spool shape, and tension can affect the final result.
Example: Using Backing with Braid
Let’s say your spinning reel is rated for:
10 lb mono / 165 yd
You want to spool:
150 yards of braid
And you are using:
10 lb mono backing
ReelCalc estimates how much mono backing should go on the reel first, so the 150 yards of braid finishes close to a full spool.
This helps avoid wasting expensive braid deep on the spool where you may never use it.
Example: Finding Total Line Capacity Without Backing
If you do not want to use backing, use Capacity Only mode.
For example, if your reel is rated for 10 lb mono / 165 yd, but you want to know how much thinner braid fits on the spool, Capacity Only mode can estimate the total amount of that braid diameter the reel may hold.
This is useful when you want to fill the reel with one line instead of using backing.
Why Line Diameter Matters More Than Pound Test
Fishing reel capacity is mostly about line diameter, not just pound test.
A reel may say it holds 10 lb line, but one brand’s 10 lb mono may be thicker or thinner than another brand’s 10 lb mono. Braid is usually much thinner than mono at the same pound test, which is why a reel can often hold much more braid than mono.
For better results, always use the actual line diameter instead of guessing from pound test alone.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not use pound test as a direct replacement for diameter. Always check the line diameter when possible.
Do not mix up inches and millimeters. A line listed as 0.30 mm is not the same as 0.030 mm.
Do not overfill the spool. A spinning reel filled too high can cause wind knots, loops, and casting problems.
Do not assume every reel fills exactly the same. Spool shape, line tension, and line lay can slightly change the final result.

When Should You Use Backing?
Use backing when your main line is expensive, when you only need part of a braid spool, or when you want braid to grip the spool better.
Backing is especially helpful with braided line because braid can slip on a bare spool if it is tied directly to smooth metal without tape or backing.
A short layer of mono backing gives the braid something to bite into and can save money by keeping expensive braid only on the working part of the spool.
When Should You Use Capacity Only Mode?
Use Capacity Only mode when you want to know how much line fits on your reel without using backing.
This is helpful when:
You want to fill the whole spool with one line.
You are switching from mono to braid.
You are switching from one braid diameter to another.
You want to compare reel capacities before buying line.
