SPRO Depth Control 8X
Diameter chart, reel capacity & backing guide

Depth Control 8X is SPRO's metered ocean braid for high-speed and slow-pitch jigging. The official page specifies color coding every 10 m. Verified 30-80 lb packages include 300 m fillers and 3,000 m bulk spools.
- Construction
- Eight-strand ocean-fishing braid with pitch marks and color changes every 10 m
- Listed strengths
- 30-80 lb
- Line type
- Braid main line
Is Depth Control 8X right for your setup?
This line is aimed at anglers who need a repeatable indication of line paid out when jigging. Metered line tracks deployment length, not guaranteed vertical lure depth: current, boat drift and line angle still matter. Choose enough working braid for the intended water depth and fish runs before using any backing.

| Strength | Inches | mm | Spools (m / yd) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 lb | 0.009449 | 0.240 | 300 m (about 328 yd), 3000 m (about 3280.839895 yd) |
| 40 lb | 0.011024 | 0.280 | 300 m (about 328 yd), 3000 m (about 3280.839895 yd) |
| 50 lb | 0.012402 | 0.315 | 300 m (about 328 yd), 3000 m (about 3280.839895 yd) |
| 60 lb | 0.01378 | 0.350 | 300 m (about 328 yd), 3000 m (about 3280.839895 yd) |
| 80 lb | 0.016535 | 0.420 | 300 m (about 328 yd), 3000 m (about 3280.839895 yd) |
Choosing your Depth Control 8X strength
The 30 and 40 lb labels are 0.24 and 0.28 mm. A smaller diameter can change capacity substantially, but strength choice still needs to suit jig weight, drag and target fish.
The 50, 60 and 80 lb labels are 0.315, 0.35 and 0.42 mm. Check the selected reel's real capacity rather than assuming a 300 m filler fits every offshore spool.
The 2026 catalog describes additional very heavy sizes. They are not added here without corresponding reviewed diameter evidence and current package identity.
Specification-based guidance, not a ReelCalc hands-on performance test. Capacity results are estimates, not measured fills.

Start with depth and reserve
Allow for deployment beyond the vertical water depth when the line is angled, plus fish runs and future trimming. Backing should remain below the working braid throughout that plan.
Count marks, not assumed depth
SPRO specifies color changes every 10 m. Count them as line-out information; do not treat each color as proof the jig is exactly 10 m deeper.
Match 300 m or bulk to the reel
The filler package is labeled 300 m / 328 yd. The 3,000 m offering is bulk supply and should be divided by actual fill needs, not guessed from the number of reels.
Depth Control 8X questions, answered
How often does the color change?
SPRO states every 10 m. That is a metering interval along the line, not a direct vertical-depth measurement.
Is it for slow-pitch jigging only?
The official description includes both high-speed and slow-pitch jigging and calls out spinning tackle.
Does 328 yards equal the water depth I can fish?
No. Deployment, line angle, reserve for runs and any leader length all affect the practical plan. A package length is not a guaranteed fishing depth.
How much Depth Control 8X will fit my reel?
Use the exact strength and the reel's published capacity. Pound test is not a fixed diameter, so equal-strength products can produce different fill estimates.
Is one 328-yard package enough?
Only when it covers the planned working length and an appropriate reserve. Backing can fill unused volume, but cannot supply more working line for long casts, deep drops or fish runs.
Specifications & sources
Official sources retrieved September 13, 2026. Millimeter diameters are published; inches are converted by dividing by 25.4. Millimeter diameters visually read from all five official 300 m / 328 yd packages. Current 3,000 m bulk variants verified separately and converted at 1 yd = 0.9144 m. Package options are not a stock or price guarantee.
Calculations use the catalog's listed inch diameters. Published inch and millimeter values may differ slightly because of rounding.
